Teaching English to Children

Children in learning foreign language are better than adult. In their golden age, children more easily to memorize whatever they have seen and heard because they still have long memorization. In addition, the physical world is dominant at all time. It is because children's understanding comes through hands, eyes, and ears. Besides, in learning a new language, children are centered on here and now, on the functional purposes of language.

Children as commonly children have different skills and ability in their age. Normally, children of five to ten are very different in their think, their can do, and their behavior. According to Scott and Ytreberg (2004:1-4) children are divide into two main groups, the five to seven and eight to ten year olds.

Children at five to seven, they can talk about what they are doing and tell us about what they have done and heard. Besides, they also began plan their activities and argue something and tell us what they think and why they think. In addition, in learning a new matter they have very short attention  and concentration span, and they are very logical_what they say first, it happen first. However, children at eight to ten are different. They have very decided views of the world because their basic concept are formed, and can tell difference between fact and fiction. They are also able to make decisions about their own learning and to work with their classmates.

Concerning those characteristics, the techniques to build up the children's motivation, to grow up the children's self confidence, and to build up the children's interest are very important to improve their language skills. Hence, a teacher needs to make the teaching as learning process more interesting as in the students' daily life so that it can motivate them to learn English.

In teaching English, the teacher should prepare the course grid, the lesson plan, and the material before she/he teach in the classroom. The course grids were used as contents of lesson plans.
